Paint Realistic Cityscape at Sunset in Watercolors using ArtistAssistApp

ArtistAssistApp is created for beginner and professional traditional artists in collaboration with watercolor artist Irina Khist. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, whether you like realistic or loose painting styles, whether you want to paint landscapes, portraits, still lifes, botanical illustrations, or anything else, you'll find ArtistAssistApp extremely useful.

The app supports a variety of mediums, including watercolor paint, gouache, acrylic paint, acrylic gouache, oil paint, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, soft pastel, hard pastel, pastel pencils, and oil pastel. The app has more than 140 color brands in total.

ArtistAssistApp is an essential painting and drawing assistant for all artist students and is especially useful for painting reproduction.

Match any color from your photo or learn how to accurately mix it

Choose your favorite color brands, then choose a color set or manually add the colors you have on hand. Click or tap anywhere on the reference photo, and ArtistAssistApp will find the closest matching color in your set or give you a step-by-step guide on how to precisely mix that color using atomic or optical mixing. Atomic mixing is the physical mixing of colors together, while optical mixing is the result of placing a transparent layer of color over another color (glaze technique).

You can view the similarity between the target and suggested colors in percents. 100% means a perfect color match. 0% means completely different colors, like black and white.

Quickly access your favorite color mixtures

Save color mixing instructions for your favorite colors in the palette for quick reference. There is a separate palette for each reference photo and one common palette.

The point in the photo where the color was picked is also saved. Thus, you can easily recall which part of the photo the color mixture belongs to. Additionally, you can assign a name to each color mixture.

In color swatch mode, all the colors in the palette are stacked on top of each other and displayed next to the photo.

Do a tonal value study

Balancing tonal values is just as important as accurately mixing colors. Use tonal value sketches that capture the light and shadow of your subject to learn how to create contrast and depth in your paintings. Correct tonal values make a painting look realistic.

Tonal value sketches are displayed next to the original image, so it's all on one screen to paint from.

You can also print tonal value sketches by pressing a button.

Smooth out the photo so you don't get lost in the details

Smooth out your reference photo to reduce detail and focus on the big shapes and proportions of your subject. Learn how to simplify and abstract your paintings. No more squinting your eyes to blur your reference.

Flowers, especially peonies, have so many details that it's easy to get lost in them. By reducing the detail of the photo, you will immediately understand how to depict a flower with large strokes.

Turn any photo into an outline

Do you prefer tracing rather than freehand drawing? ArtistAssistApp can convert your reference photo into an outline that you can print with a single press of a button and trace onto paper.

Do you want to trace a photo that is larger than the standard printer paper size? ArtistAssistApp enables you to print a large image onto multiple pages using your home printer.

Draw a grid over your reference photo

Drawing with a grid is a wonderful way to capture objects and scenes more accurately. The grid method allows you to redraw a reference photo to any size and preserves the proportions. A grid divides the reference photo into smaller sections. Draw a grid of the same dimension on your piece of paper. Focus on a particular section of the grid and carefully redraw what you see within it.

The app supports square grids of various sizes as well as simple, easy-to-draw 3x3 and 4x4 grids with diagonals.

You can print a photo with a grid over it by pressing a button.

Experiment with limited color palettes

Using a limited palette helps achieve color harmony. Select up to 7 colors to be your primary colors and see what your reference photo would look like painted with just those colors. It helps to depict the atmosphere. For example, the lighting in the north is different from the Mediterranean, as are the colors needed to depict this atmosphere.

The limited palette feature demonstrated the app's high precision in color matching. It matches even the darkest parts of images with outstanding accuracy. The app creates an almost identical image to the reference photo, using only three primary colors and black.

Mix any colors of any brands in any proportions

Don't waste real paint on color mixing experiments. ArtistAssistApp allows you to choose specific colors of specific brands to mix, specify the proportions, and get the resulting color mixture in various consistencies.

ArtistAssistApp uses a highly accurate, scientifically proven Kubelka-Munk model to simulate real color mixing. Thus, you can experiment with color mixing directly in ArtistAssistApp, eliminating the need to waste real paints, which can be expensive.

Remove backgrounds from photos of your illustrations

ArtistAssistApp can remove the background from your illustrations. Some paintings, especially botanical illustrations and pet portraits, truly shine on the snow-white background.

You no longer need to erase the background on illustrations manually. Import a photo of your illustration into the app, wait a bit, and download it on a transparent background.

Rank your photos using pairwise comparison

It can be difficult to choose between multiple photos. Comparing each photo with others in pairs simplifies the choice and helps identify the most preferred one. ArtistAssistApp will help you determine the best photo through pairwise comparison and get a photo rating.

The app uses the Elo rating system to determine rankings fairly.

Share color sets between your devices

The app saves color sets, recent photos, and palettes on your device and restores them when you reopen the app.

You can also share color sets between your devices. You can send a link for your color set from your PC or laptop to your tablet or smartphone, or you can scan a QR code. Simply scan the QR code with the camera of the device you want to import the color set to. Once you open the link, your new device will import your color set.

Install the app on your device for offline access

ArtistAssistApp installation

You can install ArtistAssistApp on any device and use it offline without an Internet connection. Once installed, you can use the app like any other app: launch it from the home screen, use it to open photos, share photos with it, etc.

Supported operating systems: Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.

How does ArtistAssistApp work?

ArtistAssistApp uses the scientifically proven Kubelka-Munk model to simulate real color mixing, focusing on spectral reflectances instead of RGB or other color models. It calculates color similarity by comparing spectral reflectance curves and presents the similarity as a percentage.

You can visually check how similar the spectral reflectance curves of the target color and the suggested color mixture are.

For mediums that support physical mixing like watercolor, oil paint, acrylics, or gouache, ArtistAssistApp easily finds a matching color mixture for any target color. Accurate color matching is possible even for pastels, a medium that doesn't support physical mixing. Colored pencils and watercolor pencils support optical mixing just like watercolor, oil paint, and acrylics.
